RESUMO

Brachyura and Anomala (or Anomura), also referred to as true and false crabs, form the species-rich and globally abundant group of Meiura, an ingroup of Decapoda. The evolutionary success of both groups is sometimes attributed to the process of carcinization (evolving a crab-like body), but might also be connected to the megalopa, a specific transitional larval phase. We investigate these questions, using outline analysis of the shields (carapaces) of more than 1500 meiuran crabs. We compare the morphological diversity of different developmental phases of major ingroups of true and false crabs. We find that morphological diversity of adults is larger in false crabs than in true crabs, indicating that taxonomic diversity and morphological diversity are not necessarily linked. The increasing morphological disparity of adults of true and false crabs with increasing phylogenetic distance furthermore indicates diverging evolution of the shield morphology of adult representatives of Meiura. Larvae of true crabs also show larger diversity than their adult counterparts, highlighting the importance of larvae for biodiversity studies. The megalopa phase of Meiura appears to be plesiomorphic, as it overlaps between true and false crabs and shows little diversity. Causes may be common evolutionary constraints on a developmental phase specialized for transitioning.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the population distribution of intermediate host snails and crabs of Paragonimus along the Jiulongjiang River, Zhangjiang River, and Dongxi River basins in Bopingling Mountain, southern Fujian Province, so as to provide baseline data for researches on parasitic disease prevention and control and enlargement of samples in the parasitic resource bank. METHODS: A total of 23 villages in 8 counties (districts) along the Jiulong River, Zhangjiang River, and Dongxi River basins in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province were selected as survey sites during the period from November 2020 through March 2023, and snail and freshwater crabs were sampled from 1 to 3 streams and ditches neighboring residential areas in each village. Morphological identification of snails was performed according to the external morphological characteristics of collected snail shells, and the unidentified snail species sampled from the natural foci of paragonimiasis in Yunxiao County were subjected to se-quence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) gene. The crab species was identified by observing the morphological characteristics of the terminal segment of the first pleopod of male crabs, and Paragonimus cercariae and metacercariae were detected in collected snails. RESULTS: The shells of the unidentified snails sampled from the natural foci of paragonimiasis in Yunxiao County were approximately 50 mm in height and 18 mm in width, thick and solid, long tower cone-shaped, and had 8 to 10 whorls. CO1 gene sequence analysis identified the snail species as Sulcospira hainanensis. A total of 6 freshwater snail species belonging to 5 genera within 3 families, identified 23 survey sites, including Semisulcospira libertina, Paludomus zhangchouensis and S. hainanensis that belonged to the Family Pleurceridae, Tricula fujianensis and T. huaanensis that belonged to the subfamily Triculinae, Family Pomatiopsidae, and Melanoides tuberculata (Family Thiaridae), and 11 species of freshwater crabs belonging to 5 genera within 2 families were identified, including Sinopotamon genus of S. jianglense, S. pinheense, and S. zhangzhouense, Huananpotamon genus of H. planopodum and H. zhangzhouense, Nanhaipotamon genus of N. huaanense and N. longhaiense, and Minpotamon genus of M. nasicum and M. auritum that belonged to the Family Potamidae, and Somanniathelphusa genus of S. huaanensis and S. zhangpuensis (Family Parathelphusidae). In addition, the prevalence of P. westermani cercariae infections was 0.08% (2/2 317) in P. zhangchouensis from Danyan Village in Changtai District and 0.09% (1/1 039) in S. hainanensis from Jinkeng Village in Yunxiao County, and the prevalence of P. westermani metacercariae infections was 25.81% (8/31) in S. jianglense from Danyan Village in Changtai District, and 26.31% (5/19) in S. zhangzhouense from Jinkeng Village in Yunxiao County, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There is a population diversity in the intermediate host snails and crabs along the Jiulongjiang River, Zhangjiang River, and Dongxi River basins in Bopingling Mountain, southern Fujian Province, and P. zhangzhouensis and S. hainanensis are, for the first time, confirmed as the first intermediate hosts of P. westermani.

Organisms vary in the timing of energy acquisition and use for reproduction. Thus, breeding strategies exist on a continuum, from capital breeding to income breeding. Capital breeders acquire and store energy for breeding before the start of the reproductive season, while income breeders finance reproduction using energy acquired during the reproductive season. Latitude and its associated environmental drivers are expected to heavily influence breeding strategy, potentially leading to latitudinal variation in breeding strategies within a single species. We examined the breeding strategy of the Asian shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus at five sites spanning nearly 10° of latitude across its invaded United States range. We hypothesized that the primary breeding strategy of this species would shift from income breeding to capital breeding as latitude increases. We found that though this species' breeding strategy is dominated by capital breeding throughout much of the range, income breeding increases in importance at lower latitudes. This latitudinal pattern is likely heavily influenced by the duration of the foraging and breeding seasons, which also vary with latitude. We also found that reproductive characteristics at the northern and southern edges of the invaded range were consistent with continued range expansion. We suggest that the reproductive flexibility of the Asian shore crab is a key facilitator of its continued invasion success. Our results highlight the influence of latitude on the breeding strategy of a species and emphasize the need for further research regarding the ecological importance and implications of flexibility in breeding strategies within species.

Marine nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) pollution are escalating concerns in coastal areas. This study investigated the combined effects of continuous exposure to nano-TiO2 (25 nm, 100 nm) and PCP (0, 1, 10 µg/L) for 28 days on the antioxidant, digestive, and immune abilities of the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus. Compared with the control group, the interaction between nano-TiO2 and PCP was significantly higher than exposure to a single stressor, with a pronounced decrease in amylase activity observed due to the reducing nano-TiO2 particle sizes. Resulting in increased MDA and SOD activity. The expression levels of Toll4, CSP3, and SER genes in crab hemolymph showed perturbations following exposure to nano-TiO2 and PCP. In summary, according to the results of CAT, GPX, PES and AMS enzyme activities, it was concluded that compared to the larger particle size (100 nm), the single stress of nano-TiO2 at a smaller particle size (25 nm) and co-stress with PCP have more significant impacts on P. trituberculatus. However, the potential physiological regulation mechanism of the interaction between these pollutants remains elusive and requires further study.

Caligoplagusia okinawa n. gen. & n. sp., assigned to the brachyuran family Plagusiidae Dana, 1851 is described on the basis of a male and a female specimens collected from a semi-submerged marine cave on the limestone shore of Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. The new monotypic genus is most similar to Euchirograpsus H. Milne Edwards, 1853 and Miersiograpsus Trkay, 1978 in that the frontal margin lacks a deep sublateral cleft adjacent to the orbit, but differs significantly by its subhexagonal carapace shape, the anterolateral margin of the carapace with three teeth including the external orbital tooth, the anterior margin of ambulatory meri each armed with a row of large teeth, and the greatly reduced eyes. The pale body colour, reduced eyes, the very elongate antennal flagellum, and long ambulatory legs are all typical brachyuran adaptations to living in cave environments. This is the first cave-dwelling species of the family Plagusiidae.

Background: The present study investigated the population structure and breeding biology of the burrowing brachyuran crab species Dotilla blanfordi Alcock, 1900, which is commonly found on the sandy beach of Bhavnagar, located on the Gulf of Kachchh, Gujarat coast, India. Methods: Monthly sampling was conducted from February 2021 to January 2022 at the time of low tide using three line transects perpendicular to the water line, intercepted by a quadrate (0.25 m2) each at three different levels of the middle intertidal region: 20 m, 70 m, and 120 m. The quadrate area was excavated up to 30 cm and sieved for specimen collection. The collected specimens were categorised into different sexes viz., male, non-ovigerous female, or ovigerous female. For the fecundity study of D. blanfordi, the carapace width (mm) as a measure of size as well as their wet weight (g), size, number, and mass of their eggs were also recorded. Results: The study revealed sexual dimorphism among the population, with females having significantly smaller sizes as compared to males. The overall population was skewed towards females, with a bimodal distribution of males and females. The occurrence of ovigerous females throughout the year suggests that the population breeds incessantly throughout the year, with the highest occurrence in August and September. A positive correlation was observed between the morphology of crabs (carapace width and wet body weight) and the size, number, and mass of eggs.

Dredging wastewater (DW) from aquaculture ponds is a major disturbance factor in mangrove management, and its effects on the greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes from mangrove sediment remain controversial. In this study, we investigated GHG (N2O, CH4, and CO2) fluxes from mangrove sediment at typical aquaculture pond-mangrove sites that were stimulated by DW discharged for different input histories and from different farm types. The GHG fluxes exhibited differing cumulative effects with increasing periods of DW input. The N2O and CH4 fluxes from mangrove sediment that received DW inputs for 17 y increased by ∼10 and ∼1.5 times, respectively, whereas the CO2 flux from mangrove sediment that received DW inputs for 11 y increased by ∼1 time. The effect of DW from shrimp ponds on the N2O flux was significantly larger than those of DW from fish/crab ponds and razor clam ponds. Moreover, the total global warming potentials (GWPs) at the field sites with DW inputs increased by 29-129% of which the CO2 flux was the main contributor to the GWP (85-96%). N2O as a proportion of CO2-equivalent flux increased from 2% to 12%, indicating that N2O was an important contributor to the increase in GWP. Overall, DW increased the GHG fluxes from mangrove sediments, indicating that the contribution of mangroves to climate warming was enhanced under DW input. It also implies that the carbon sequestration potential of mangrove sediments may be threatened to some extent. Therefore, future assessments of the carbon sequestration capacity of mangroves at regional or global scales should consider this phenomenon.

A coastal predator-prey system, juvenile green crabs (Carcinus maenas) preying upon juvenile hard clams (Mercenaria mercenaria), was used to explore the link between crab predation rates and clam density and small-scale distribution patterns. The channel working area of a racetrack flume was adapted to form a sedimentary arena in a flowing seawater system (5 cm s-1) to assess crab predation rates in relation to clam density and distribution patterns (clams clustered in one patch vs two nearby vs two farther apart). The trials detected significant differences in relation to clam initial density and distribution with strong (∼50%) declines in clam mortality levels among spatial arrangements (one patch > two nearby > two farther apart). Feeding of clams was associated with the time taken by crabs to handle the first clam (first patch), and the frequency of three distinct types of crab behavior (eating, resting, and searching). Altogether these results suggest that small-scale changes in number and distribution of juvenile clams matter and may have unexpectedly strong effects on the outcome of predator-prey interactions.

The excretory mechanisms of stenohaline marine osmoconforming crabs are often compared to those of the more extensively characterized euryhaline osmoregulating crabs. These comparisons may have limitations, given that unlike euryhaline brachyurans the gills of stenohaline marine osmoconformers possess ion-leaky paracellular pathways and lack the capacity to undergo ultrastructural changes that can promote ion-transport processes in dilute media. Furthermore, the antennal glands of stenohaline marine osmoconformers are poorly characterized making it difficult to determine what role urinary processes play in excretion. In the presented study, ammonia excretory processes as well as related acid-base equivalent transport rates and mechanisms were investigated in the Dungeness crab, Metacarcinus magister - an economically valuable stenohaline marine osmoconforming crab. Isolated and perfused gills were found to predominantly eliminate ammonia through a microtubule network-dependent active NH4+ transport mechanism that is likely performed by cells lining the arterial pockets of the gill lamella where critical Na+/K+-ATPase detection was observed. The V-type H+-ATPase - a vital component to transbranchial ammonia excretion mechanisms of euryhaline crabs - was not found to contribute significantly to ammonia excretion; however, this may be due to the transporter's unexpected apical localization. Although unconnected to ammonia excretion rates, a membrane-bound isoform of carbonic anhydrase was localized to the apical and basolateral membranes of lamella suited for respiration. Urine was found to contain significantly less ammonia as well as carbonate species than the hemolymph, indicating that unlike those of some euryhaline crabs the antennal glands of the Dungeness crab reabsorb these molecules rather than eliminate them for excretion.

The effect of Kamchatka crab hepatopancreas containing three collagenolytic isoenzymes Collagenase KK and proteinases of Streptomyces lavendulae on metabolic activity and cell death were carried out on in vitro models. It was shown that changes in the protein structure under the influence of Collagenase KK occurred earlier than under the effect of bacterial proteinases. At the same time, activity of Collagenase KK was significantly higher than that of bacterial proteinases (p<0.01). Both preparations had a pronounced time- and dose-dependent effects on metabolic activity of cells. Collagenase KK had low cytotoxic effect, and cells mainly died by apoptosis. Thus, hepatopancreas collagenase has a high activity and proapoptotic effect on cells and can be used in low concentrations for enzymatic disaggregation of tissues.

Mannose-binding lectin plays an essential role in bacteria or virus-triggered immune response in mammals. Previous proteomic data revealed that in Eriocheir sinensis, the mannose-binding protein was differentially expressed after Spiroplasma eriocheiris infection. However, the function of mannose-binding protein against pathogen infection in invertebrates is poorly understood. In this study, a crab mannose-binding protein (EsMBP) was characterized and enhanced the host resistance to S. eriocheiris infection. The application of recombinant C-type carbohydrate recognition domain (CTLD) of EsMBP led to increased crab survival and decreased S. eriocheiris load in hemocytes. Meanwhile, the overexpression of CTLD of EsMBP in Raw264.7 cells inhibited S. eriocheiris intracellular replication. In contrast, depletion of EsMBP by RNA interference or antibody neutralization attenuated phenoloxidase activity and hemocyte phagocytosis, rendering host more susceptible to S. eriocheiris infection. Furthermore, miR-381-5p in hemocytes suppressed EsMBP expression and negatively regulated phenoloxidase activity to exacerbate S. eriocheiris invasion of hemocytes. Taken together, our findings revealed that crab mannose-binding protein was involved in host defense against S. eriocheiris infection and targeted by miR-381-5p, providing further insights into the control of S. eriocheiris spread in crabs.

The kleptoparasitic pea crab Zaops ostreum lives within the gills of bivalves, including the economically important eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica. Previous research along the east coast of central Florida has found an average of 2.3 pieces of plastic per oyster. The goals of our research were to determine if filter-feeding oysters transfer microfibers to Z. ostreum via the crab: 1) actively consuming plastic particles, or 2) passively becoming entangled in microfibers. Our results show that both occur. While only 11.6 % of Z. ostreum (total n = 122) consumed microfibers, those that did had up to 14 pieces in their soft tissues. Similarly, only 7.4 % of Z. ostreum had microfibers entangled around their appendages. Mean lengths of consumed and entangled fibers were similar, 1.9 and 2.7 mm, respectively. Additional research is needed to understand the positive and negative impacts of microfibers associated with pea crabs on both species.

Microplastics (MPs) and bisphenol-A (BPA) have been shown to have toxic effects on aquatic organisms. However, data on the combined effects of MPs and BPA on the innate immune system response and intestinal microorganisms of crabs are limited. Here, Portunus trituberculatus were exposed to BPA (at a concentration of 100 µg/L), MPs (microbeads of polystyrene with a particle size of 1 µm and at a concentration of 1 × 106 particles/L) or BPA+MPs for 21 days were tested at the tissue, cellular, and molecular levels. The results showed that neither the single nor combined exposure of MPs and BPA had a significant impact on the growth of crabs. However, intestinal histology study found that the intestinal villi of crabs in the BPA treated group, MP treated group and MP+BPA treated group appeared abnormal. Overall, compared with the control group and the single pollutant exposure group, co-exposure to the MP and BPA generally led to a significant increase in MDA and SOD activity and a significant decrease in CAT activity, and the activation of MyD88, Crustin-1, TARF6, Cu/Zn-SOD, Lyz, Toll-2 and NOX gene expression levels were significantly up-regulated. Co-exposure induced disorders of the intestinal microbial community of crabs, resulting in an increase in the abundance of harmful bacteria and a decrease in the abundance of beneficial bacteria. This study shows that the combined exposure of MPs and BPA can exacerbate the intestinal toxicity of a single pollutant to P. trituberculatus.

Pseudohemocyanin is a member of the hemocyanin superfamily, but little research is available on its function in immunology. In this study, a Portunus trituberculatus pseudohemocyanin gene, named PtPhc1, was obtained by gene cloning. The PtPhc1 cDNA was 2312 bp in length, encoding 684 amino acids while exhibiting a characteristic hemocyanin structural domain. Tissue expression analysis revealed ubiquitous expression of PtPhc1 across all tissues, with the highest level of expression observed in the hepatopancreas. The expression pattern of PtPhc1 in response to Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection was clarified using RT-qPCR in swimming crabs. Notably, the expression peaked at 24 h, and increased 1435-fold compared to the control group in the hepatopancreas. While the expression level reached the maximum value at 72 h, which was 3.24 times higher than that of the control group in hemocytes. Remarkably, the reduction in PtPhc1 expression led to a noteworthy 30% increase in the mortality rate of P. trituberculatus when exposed to V. parahaemolyticus. In addition, in vitro bacterial inhibition assays exhibited a dose-dependent suppression of bacterial proliferation by recombinant PtPhc1 protein, with a notable inhibition rate of 48.33% against V. parahaemolyticus at a concentration of 0.03 mg/mL. To the best of our knowledge, the results establish the function of pseudohaemocyanin in immunity for the first time, contributing to a deeper comprehension of innate immune regulatory mechanisms in aquatic organisms and advancing strategies for disease-resistant breeding.

As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D3 relies on fat to perform its biological function, affecting lipid metabolism and innate immunity. This study used different percentages of lipid and vitamin D3 diets to evaluate the synergistic effects on the growth, lipid metabolism and immunity of juvenile Eriocheir sinensis (5.83 ± 0.01 g) for 56 days, including low lipid (LL, 1.5%) and normal lipid (NL, 7.5%) and three levels of vitamin D3: low (LVD, 0 IU/kg), medium (MVD, 9000 IU/kg) and high (HVD, 27,000, IU/kg). The synergistic effect of lipid and vitamin D3 was not significant on growth but significant on ash content, total protein, hepatopancreas lipid content, hemolymph 1α,25-hydroxy vitamin D3 [1α,25(OH)2D3] content, hepatopancreas lipolysis and synthesis genes. Crabs fed normal lipid (7.5%) and medium vitamin D3 (9000 IU/kg) had the highest hepatopancreas index, hemolymph 1α,25(OH)2D3 content, antibacterial ability, immune-related genes and hepatopancreatic lipid synthesis genes expression, but down-regulated the lipolysis genes expression. In contrast, crabs fed diets with low lipid percentage (1.5%) had low growth performance, hemolymph 1α,25(OH)2D3, mRNA levels of lipid synthesis genes, antibacterial ability and immune-related gene expression. At the 1.5% lipid level, excessive or insufficient vitamin D3 supplementation led to the obstruction of ash and protein deposition, reduced growth and molting, aggravated the reduction in antioxidant capacity, hindered antimicrobial peptide gene expression and reduced innate immunity, and resulted in abnormal lipid accumulation and the risk of oxidative stress. This study suggests that diets' lipid and vitamin D3 percentage can enhance antioxidant capacity, lipid metabolism and innate immunity in E. sinensis. A low lipid diet can cause growth retardation, reduce antioxidant capacity and innate immunity, and enhance lipid metabolism disorder.

This study investigated the effects of nanoplastics (NPs) of varying particle sizes (75, 500, and 1000 nm) and concentrations (2.5 and 10 mg/L) on the gut health of Chiromantes dehaani. The experimental groups included a control (Cg0), and varying combinations of particle size and concentration. Our results showed that 75 nm NPs were more likely to enhance pathogenic bacterial growth than other sized NPs. Compared with CK, Low NPs concentrations (2.5 mg/L) raised total cholesterol (T-CHO) levels in the gut, while high concentrations significantly decreased both triglyceride (TG) and T-CHO levels (p < 0.05). The enzymatic activities of intestinal lipase and amylase were inhibited by NPs exposure, with greater inhibition at higher NPs concentrations. The 500 nm NPs exhibited a notably higher inhibitory effect than the 75 and 1000 nm NPs (P < 0.05). In terms of apoptosis, NPs exposure led to reduced mRNA expression of Bcl2 and increased expression of Caspase-3, Caspase-8, and Caspase-9, indicating an induction of apoptosis. This effect was more pronounced at higher NPs concentrations, with 75 nm NPs more likely to induce apoptosis in intestinal cells than 500 nm and 1000 nm NPs. Moreover, NPs triggered intestinal inflammatory responses, evidenced by the increased mRNA expression of TNF-ß, TNF-α, IL1ß, IL6, and IL8, and the decreased expression of IL10. High NPs concentrations were more likely to induce intestinal inflammation, with 500 nm NPs imparting the strongest effect. In summary, the study demonstrated that NPs, and particularly those at higher concentrations, disrupted the gut environment of C. dehaani by altering the microflora, reducing microbial diversity, inhibiting digestion and metabolism, inducing apoptosis, and triggering inflammation. Among the sizes of NPs tested, 500 nm NPs had the most significant adverse impact on digestion, metabolism, and inflammation, while 75 nm NPs most strongly induced apoptosis in C. dehaani's intestinal cells.

Nanopolystyrene (NP) and phoxim (PHO) are common environmental pollutants in aquatic systems. We evaluated the toxic effects of exposure to ambient concentrations of NP and/or PHO in the intestines of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). Our study showed that histopathological changes were observed in the intestines. Specifically, NP and/or PHO exposure increased intraepithelial lymphocytes. Furthermore, NP and/or PHO exposure induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), peroxidase activity (POD), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC). Pro-inflammatory gene expression and transcriptome analysis demonstrated that NP and/or PHO exposure induced the intestinal inflammatory response. Transcriptome results showed that NP and/or PHO exposure upregulated the NF-κB signaling pathway, which is considered a key pathway in the inflammatory response. Additionally, the expression of pro-inflammatory genes significantly increased after a single exposure to NP or PHO, but it exhibited a significant decrease after the co-exposure. The downregulation of these genes in the co-exposure group likely suggested that the co-exposure mitigated intestinal inflammation response in E. sinensis. Collectively, our findings mainly showed that NP and/or PHO exposure at ambient concentrations induces oxidative stress and inflammatory response in the intestines of E. sinensis.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal element that might adversely affect sperm function such as the acrosome reaction (AR). Although it is widely recognized that zinc (Zn) plays a crucial role in sperm quality, the complete elucidation of how Zn ameliorates Cd-induced sperm dysfunction is still unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the protective effects of Zn against the sperm dysfunction induced by Cd in the freshwater crab Sinopotamon henanense. The results demonstrated that Cd exposure not only impaired the sperm ultrastructure, but also caused sperm dysfunction by decreasing the AR induction rate, acrosome enzyme activity, and Ca2+ content in sperm while elevating the activity and transcription expression of key Ca2+ signaling pathway-related proteins Calmodulin (CAM) and Ca2+-ATPase. However, the administration of Zn was found to alleviate Cd-induced sperm morphological and functional disorders by increasing the activity and transcription levels of CaM and Ca2+-ATPase, thereby regulating intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis and reversing the decrease in Ca2+ contents caused by Cd. Furthermore, this study was the first to investigate the distribution of metallothionein (MT) in the AR of S. henanense, and it was found that Zn can reduce the elevated levels of MT in crabs caused by Cd, demonstrating the significance of Zn in inducing MT to participate in the AR process and in metal detoxification in S. henanense. These findings offer novel perspectives and substantiation regarding the utilization of Zn as a protective agent against Cd-induced toxicity and hold significant practical implications for mitigating Cd-induced sperm dysfunction.

Populations of the non-native Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, now dominate the rocky intertidal of southern New England, USA. High abundances suggest the recent invader may have experienced enhanced success as a result of enemy release. While larvae and juveniles may serve as a food source for ecologically important species, little is known about predation of mature H. sanguineus or the influence of habitat on predation pressure. To assess natural predation rates of adult H. sanguineus, crabs were tethered in the intertidal at Clarks Cove in New Bedford, MA. Crabs were left in situ for half of a tidal cycle then observed for signs of predation. Results of separate high and low tide trials showed that adult crabs were preyed upon at both high and low tide, though at a significantly higher rate during high tide during both daytime and nighttime, suggesting predation by aquatic species is greater than that by terrestrial species. To investigate the role of habitat as refuge from predation, a laboratory experiment manipulated the complexity of habitat provided to crabs in the presence of a native fish predator. Results indicate better refuge is provided by more complex shelter. Together, findings suggest that fish, crabs, and/or diving birds are important predators for H. sanguineus in the invaded range and that habitat refuge acts to reduce predation pressure.

The anthropogenic construction activities on the coasts, such as pile-driving, generate vibrations that propagate through the substrate. Such substrate-borne vibrations could potentially affect marine organisms inhabiting the benthic environments. However, there is a lack of documented studies on the effects of vibrations on benthic animals. To investigate whether anthropogenic substrate-borne vibrations such as pile-driving operation influence the fiddler crab, Austruca lactea, we measured their locomotion response under vibrations of 35, 120, 250, 500, and 750 Hz generated by a vibrator. We compared the locomotion of crabs between control and vibration-treatment groups using videography. The duration of movements was significantly lower under 120 Hz vibrations compared to the control. Moreover, crab velocity was significantly higher under vibrations of 120 Hz and 250 Hz compared to the control group. Our result suggests that A. lactea can detect low-frequency substrate-borne vibrations and experience stress, leading to increased energy consumption.
